Exploring Innovative Strategies for Improving Retention among Alternative Learning System (ALS) Learners
Abstract:
This qualitative case study investigates strategies to improve learner retention in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), which serves as a crucial educational pathway for out-of-school youth and adults. Drawing from in-depth interviews with ALS teachers, the findings reveal that innovative instructional approaches such as reward systems, home visitations, experiential learning, and confidence-building activities significantly enhance learner engagement and persistence. The study also highlights the value of fostering a supportive learning environment through strong teacher-learner relationships, peer collaboration, and active community involvement. To strengthen program effectiveness, the study recommends institutionalizing home visitation practices, broadening reward mechanisms through partnerships with local businesses and NGOs, and establishing comprehensive support systems for ALS educators, including access to professional development, mental health services, and advanced pedagogical resources.
