Lived Experiences of Licensed Customs Brokers in the Bureau of Customs in Iligan City in their Quest for Professionalism

Abstract: 

This study explores the lived experiences of licensed customs brokers in their pursuit of professionalism within the Bureau of Customs in Iligan City. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, it investigates the challenges they face, the coping mechanisms they employ, and their journey toward professional development. Thematic analysis reveals that customs brokers contend with multiple challenges, including constant regulatory changes, high-stakes deadlines, demanding stakeholders, ethical dilemmas, and a fast-paced, high-pressure work environment. In response, they demonstrate professional growth through enhanced critical thinking, resilience, and adaptive learning. Their coping strategies include engagement in continuous professional development, the use of digital tools and automation, cultivation of effective communication and negotiation skills, and a strong commitment to ethical practices. The findings highlight the critical role of adaptability, ethical consistency, and lifelong learning in sustaining professionalism in customs brokerage.
