Exploring Gamification in English Language Learning through Photo-Elicitation among Junior High School Students
Abstract:
This qualitative study examined the use of photo-elicitation as a gamification strategy to enhance English language learning among junior high school students. Through interviews and classroom observations, the findings indicated that photo-based activities strengthened students’ descriptive and interpretative skills, fostered creativity, and encouraged critical thinking. Learners reported greater engagement, reduced anxiety, and more dynamic participation in class, while teachers noted that the strategy supported diverse learning styles and promoted inclusivity. Nevertheless, challenges emerged, including time-intensive preparation, limited vocabulary, and constraints in instructional resources, which highlighted the need for systematic teacher training and curricular support. The study underscores the potential of integrating gamified visual tools to improve language proficiency, sustain learner motivation, and enrich instructional practices in English education.
