Success Stories of Alternative Learning System (ALS) Graduates in Skills Transfer for Livelihood Enhancement

Abstract:

This qualitative study examines the impact of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) on the livelihood outcomes of its graduates, focusing on how technical and vocational training influences employment and community engagement. Drawing from in-depth interviews with ALS completers and focus group discussions with facilitators, the findings reveal that the program equips learners with practical skills such as baking, woodworking, and ice cream making, which foster self-reliance, enhance entrepreneurial potential, and support income generation. Graduates also reported increased confidence, motivation, and social participation as a result of their ALS experience. However, several challenges were identified, including limited access to training materials, insufficient industry linkages, and the lack of sustained post-program support. These constraints point to broader structural issues that affect the continuity and scalability of livelihood initiatives within non-formal education. The study underscores the need for stronger institutional partnerships, expanded resource allocation, and the integration of entrepreneurship into ALS curricula to maximize long-term impact.
