Exploring the Poverty Alleviation Program of the Community Extension Center of Iligan Medical Center College
Abstract:
This qualitative study investigates the poverty-alleviation initiatives of the Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC) Community Extension Program, focusing on their implementation and impact on marginalized communities. Through thematic analysis of participant narratives, the study identified key initiatives such as the Barangay Disaster Risk-Sensitive Shelter Planning (BDRSSP), Flood Mitigation and Save Iligan Rivers Program, literacy and numeracy sessions, vocational scholarships, entrepreneurship training, and livelihood programs. Findings reveal that these efforts have significantly enhanced housing security, disaster resilience, environmental sustainability, and educational access, particularly among post-Typhoon Sendong survivors. Community partnership, regular monitoring, and reflective practices emerged as central themes in the successful implementation of these programs. Notably, the BDRSSP enabled the construction of disaster-resilient homes, while TESDA-accredited vocational training and livelihood programs empowered beneficiaries with practical skills and income-generating opportunities. In addition, outreach initiatives such as gift-giving drives and Brigada Eskwela illustrated IMCC’s broader commitment to education and community welfare. The study also highlights the reciprocal benefits for IMCC students, who developed leadership, civic engagement, and employability skills through their involvement.
