Lived Experiences of Virtual Assistants in Achieving Work-Life Balance in Iligan City

Abstract:

This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of virtual assistants in Iligan City in maintaining work-life balance within the context of remote employment. Using a phenomenological research design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations. Findings reveal that virtual assistants face numerous challenges, including blurred boundaries between personal and professional life, time management difficulties, social isolation, unstable workloads, and financial insecurity. These issues often disrupt personal routines and contribute to heightened stress levels. In response, participants reported employing coping mechanisms such as setting clear work boundaries, using time management tools, engaging in financial planning, developing support networks, and enhancing communication and technical skills to better meet client demands. Despite these adaptive strategies, participants emphasized the ongoing need for improved tools, systems, and organizational support to sustain their well-being. The study highlights the importance of structured support systems, effective communication practices, and policy interventions to create a more balanced and sustainable work environment for virtual assistants. Insights from this research may inform employers, policymakers, and support institutions in enhancing the quality of life and productivity of remote workers.
